Where students commonly get stuck

  • Distinguishing observation from inference in open-ended answers, which MOE's Science papers specifically test.
  • Diversity and classification questions, where a living thing fits more than one category depending on the criteria used.
  • Energy and forces questions that require applying a concept to a new, unfamiliar scenario rather than recalling a definition.

Parent tip

For open-ended Science answers, ask your child to first state what they observed, then separately what they think it means. MOE's marking scheme rewards that structure specifically, and it's a habit, not just knowledge.

P3 · Classifying Living Things

A dolphin lives its whole life in the sea, but is it correctly classified as a fish or a mammal?

It is a mammal, because it breathes air and feeds its calf with milk

It is an amphibian, because it swims

It is a fish, because it lives in water

It is a reptile, because it is large

A dolphin must come to the surface to breathe air with lungs, and it feeds its calf with milk. These mammal features matter more for classification than where the animal lives.

P4 · States of Matter

Which state of matter can be easily poured and settles to take up the shape of the bottom of its container?

A liquid flows and settles to take the shape of the bottom of whatever container holds it, while keeping the same total volume.

P5 · Human System — Respiratory and Circulatory Systems / Integration

Why is it important that the circulatory, respiratory, digestive and excretory systems all work together, rather than functioning separately?

The systems compete with each other for the same resources and normally work against one another

Only one system is actually needed for the human body to survive

Each system depends on the others to supply what it needs and remove what it doesn't, keeping the whole body functioning properly

Each system works in complete isolation and never affects the others

The body's systems are interconnected — for example, the circulatory system depends on the respiratory system for oxygen and the digestive system for nutrients.

P6 · Photosynthesis & Respiration

A mouse and a healthy green plant are sealed together in a glass jar placed in bright light. How does this affect the mouse compared to being alone in a jar?

There is no difference, since plants do not affect the air inside the jar

The mouse dies faster than if it were alone, as the plant competes for oxygen

The mouse still dies quickly, because plants only produce carbon dioxide

The mouse can survive longer, as the plant produces oxygen through photosynthesis for the mouse to use

In the light, the plant photosynthesises, producing oxygen for the mouse and using up the carbon dioxide the mouse breathes out — a mutual gas exchange that helps the mouse survive longer.
