A thick, waxy cuticle acts as a waterproof barrier that greatly slows down the evaporation of water from the plant's surface, an important adaptation for surviving in dry habitats.

Water lilies and other hydrophytes have air spaces in their stems and leaves. What is the main purpose of these air spaces?

To protect the plant from being eaten by fish

To provide buoyancy so the leaves can float and reach sunlight, and to help transport oxygen to submerged parts

Air spaces make plant tissue less dense, allowing leaves to float on the water surface for sunlight, while also letting oxygen diffuse down to parts of the plant submerged in low-oxygen water.
