Where students commonly get stuck

  • Mixing up part-whole and comparison models in word problems, especially once two or more unknowns are involved.
  • Fraction operations (adding, subtracting, converting) once denominators stop matching.
  • Long division and multi-step arithmetic under time pressure, where a single slip changes the final answer.

Parent tip

When your child gets a word problem wrong, ask them to draw or describe the model before re-solving it. Most mistakes come from misreading the relationship between numbers, not from the arithmetic itself.
