Cutting a rectangular notch from a corner removes some edges but adds new edges of the same total length, so the perimeter stays the same.

A rectilinear figure is formed by cutting a 4 cm by 4 cm square out of one corner of a 12 cm by 9 cm rectangle. What is the area of the remaining figure, in cm²?

Priya says: 'When you cut a rectangular notch out of the CORNER of a rectangle, the area decreases but the perimeter always stays exactly the same.' Why is this true for a corner notch, but would NOT be true if the notch were cut into the middle of one side instead?

A corner notch removes parts of two adjacent sides and replaces them with two new sides of matching total length, keeping the perimeter unchanged. A notch cut into the middle of a side instead adds brand-new edges around the notch, which increases the total perimeter.
