Real Speed practice questions
Which is faster: 54 km/h or 20 m/s?
54 km/h
20 m/s ✓
20 m/s = 20 × 3.6 = 72 km/h, which is faster than 54 km/h.
A car travels the first 100 km of a journey at 50 km/h and the next 100 km at 100 km/h. What is the average speed for the whole 200 km journey, in km/h?
66.7 km/h ✓
70 km/h
75 km/h
80 km/h
Time for first part = 100 ÷ 50 = 2 h. Time for second part = 100 ÷ 100 = 1 h. Average speed = 200 ÷ 3 ≈ 66.7 km/h (not the simple average of the two speeds).
If a car's speed doubles but the time taken stays the same, what happens to the distance travelled?
It stays the same
It doubles ✓
It is halved
It quadruples
Since distance = speed × time, doubling the speed while time stays the same doubles the distance.
A train's speed is 25 m/s. A worksheet asks students to convert this to km/h. Which working is correct?
25 + 3.6 = 28.6 km/h
25 × 60 = 1500 km/h
25 × 3.6 = 90 km/h ✓
25 ÷ 3.6 = 6.94 km/h
To convert m/s to km/h, multiply by 3.6: 25 × 3.6 = 90 km/h.
